National Security Advisor – Washington D.C.

Overview: The Office of Senator-elect Elissa Slotkin seeks candidates for a national security adviser position to serve as her key advisor on national security and foreign policy issues. 

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Strategic Advice: The National Security Advisor will serve as the principal national security policy advisor to the Senator-elect, responsible for developing and advancing a serious national security portfolio across a wide range of issues. The National Security Advisor will be responsible for tracking world events, and delivering timely briefings and recommendations to the Senator-elect. 
  • Research: This position involves conducting in-depth research on policy issues; analyzing legislation; drafting memos, speeches, and other materials; and providing strategic advice to the Senator-elect on upcoming bills, votes, and policy initiatives in the national security sphere.
  • Representation of the Senator-elect: The National Security Advisor will at times represent the Senator-elect in meetings and attend hearings or other events on her behalf.
  • Internal collaboration: The National Security Advisor will actively collaborate with other staff members, government agencies, and advocacy groups to advance the Senator-elect’s legislative agenda. 

Candidate qualifications

  • Deep experience in national security, either in the Executive branch or Legislative branch. 
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written – and the ability to deliver a concise, strategic verbal briefing.  
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to juggle multiple tasks simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Understanding of the legislative process, include formal and informal processes for bringing legislation from conception to enactment.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality, stay updated on policy developments, and collaborate effectively with a wide range of individuals and groups.
  • Experience managing high performing teams. 
  • The ability to work both independently and as part of a team are also crucial for success in this role.
  • An active security clearance or the ability to successfully complete the clearance process.

Location and work environment: This role is in the Washington D.C. office. Candidates should expect a fast paced, results oriented work environment.
